So I only think you should walk on to a school if you have a “preferred walk on”. The difference between a regular walk on and a preferred is that a preferred walk on will start fall camp with the team and the coaches already know them. A regular walk on will start practicing with the team (if they make it) when the fall semester starts. So you might be 1-2 months behind everyone. A “preferred walk on” is essentially someone who is probably/maybe good enough to be a scholarship player but they did not have the scholarship money to give out. Everyone thinks schools have unlimited money. But each recruiting class is only about 10-15 guys. They don’t have unlimited scholarships. But a preferred walk on usually has a spot on the team. If you don’t know any coaches at the university and you just plan on crushing the walk on tryout & then making it… it’s a much tougher road than you think. First, you need to find out when the tryout is… then you are going to need to stand out amongst probably 100 other athletes. And some of you might be able to, but that’s hard when you only have 2-3 hours to do so. I personally think if you’re in that situation you might be better off attending a JUCO for 1-2 years then transferring. 1)- It saves you money. 2)- You can get recruited out of a JUCO. And when a JUCO player gets recruited, that school is recruiting him to make an immediate impact. They don’t recruit JUCO players to develop them. They recruit them to compete for a chance to play right when they get on campus. I’m not going to tell you to not walk on, but just know these things and that there are cheaper alternatives.
