WRs need to be able to read defenses, diagnose coverages and then be able to know what a corners responsibility is. But why is this important and how can you do it? This is important because you need to be on the same page as your QB to get more receptions. Like for example let’s say that it’s a 4-3 set and the Mike backer is responsible for the middle hook to curl and you’re running a dig. You need to know this so you don’t just run your route right into him and set up an interception for the QB. You need to sit in between the windows the defense creates. Thats just one of the many examples that you need to learn. How you guys can get better at this is through film study. WRs should be watching just as much film as QBs. Especially when you get to the next level. And this doesn’t mean watching film only when your team watches film. Anytime you have 1-2 hours in the day you should be watching game tape of the team you are playing. You should be taking notes of how the DBs like to play and what % of the time they are in each coverage. So when you go into a game you have a plan of action and know what routes/releases/moves will work. As a WR you need to be a second QB on the field. In practice try to set yourself up with a good pre snap process. Identify safeties first, then the corners leverage and then the men in the box. If you can consistently do this and rep this, it will become an automated habit in the game. WRs do not get enough credit for the mental aspect of the game. People just think you run around and catch a ball, but there is so much more to that.
