There is a 3 step process to how WRs can read defenses and that’s what we will discuss today.
The first thing WRs must do is identify the corner. What is his leverage like? How is he playing you? Is he press, is he off man, is he zone etc. this is how you can structure a release, move at the top of the route or route stem to efficiently get you separation. A lot of guys cant do this because they don’t know the reason “why” behind a release or a move. Make sure when you are training you understand WHEN to use each release not just how. If you guys would like over 200+ WR drills that will help you learn how to do each route running move & press release but also learn the reason why behind each move and when to use it against each coverage, checkout the link below! ⬇️⬇️
The second thing WRs need to do to read defenses is identify the safety. You see how the corner is playing you first but that could mean a whole lot of things. If you can identify the number of safeties and what their responsibility might be, you can lean the entire coverage as a whole. For example you see that a corner is 7-8yds off facing the QB, then you see 2 safeties who are both at 10-12… that looks like cover 4. Bam you know it is zone and you can structure your route accordingly.
And last but not least, you need to identify the men in the box and how much pressure a QB might be getting. After you Identify the corners and the safeties just take a quick peak inside the box. If you have a route like a slant, hitch or out route… know that if it looks like they are blitzing the QB is going to want to get you the ball quickly. You don’t need to know everyone’s responsibility in the box, but you should have a general concept of what a defense is trying to do.
Now I know this may seem like a lot to think about, and it is! You can get much faster at this process by studying film. Study your opponent. Study what they run, how the run it and when they like to run it. This can make your pre snap process much faster and allow you to play the game much faster.
