Below we will be discussing how you can spot a fake offer. Fake offers are commonly known as “verbal” offers or non committable offers. I hope this can help you!

So one thing I want you to understand is that nothing if official until you sign a National letter of intent on signing day. Which is a contractual agreement that you will be attending a specific school. Any offer before then is deemed a “verbal” offer. Or a “handshake” agreement. Which means either party (you and the college) can back out of the agreement. And this is very very common in the recruiting world nowadays. If you receive a verbal offer and let’s say you get injured or just don’t play well the remainder of your career- it’s likely the school will move on from you. That’s just the way it is unfortunately. So honestly guys, offers don’t mean anything. If you receive a verbal offer, you still have to perform. Often times guys will get a verbal offer and think they have made it and stop working and doing the things that got them the notoriety in the first place. You can never get complacent. Nothing matters until you sign on the dotted line as a senior.
Now the other type of “fake” offer is a non committable offer. You cannot receive a committable offer until the summer before your junior year. So you know that anything before then is verbal. So, anytime you get an offer you need to ask the coach if it’s committable. This essentially means that you are high on their recruiting board. Colleges can only give scholarship offers to a certain amount of players each year. It’s not unlimited. Let’s say they are recruiting for a wide receiver… they don’t offer just the one WR. They might offer 10 of them. And only really want the top 3. If there number 1 & 2 players commit elsewhere… and let’s say their #3 commits- players 4-10 will not be able to attend that school. They will revoke their verbal offer. So if you ask a coach if it’s a committable offer and he says no, then you need to also look elsewhere. You may end up at that school, but you need to keep your options open. Especially nowadays with the transfer portal. You will see more and more kids effected by this and receive these non committable offers.
So I write this to mainly educate you on the recruiting process. I don’t want you to get discouraged when you see other players get offers you don’t have and I also don’t want you to stop working hard when you receive an offer. Like I said, nothing is official until you sign. Colleges do this so they can start recruiting kids early, so if you end up being really good they can always claim “hey we were first on you” or if they lose out on their top 3 recruits, some players can be their back up plan. Recruiting is a dirty world, but you have to be educated on the topic.
