So I am assuming that everyone knows the best place to contact a college coach is through Twitter. College coaches live on Twitter and they are looking for recruits on there just as much as you are looking for a coach to take a chance on you. Instagram, TikTok etc. are all great but Twitter is where you need to be for recruiting. I personally think telling kids “just DM your film to a college coach on Twitter” is horrible advice for recruiting. If you are that guy who just spam messages your film to a million coaches from everywhere- expect a lot of coaches to never open your messages. And you probably won’t be able to send your film to coaches who don’t follow you. Your goal is quality over quantity in the DM game. Think of it like this, let’s say you have some model on Instagram who has 3 million followers- then let’s say she comes out with some kind of product for her followers to buy- but all she does is post pictures and never has any real engagement with her fans etc. Nobody is going to buy her product, because they don’t feel a real connection to the brand because they only know her through pictures and probably don’t follow because of her personality. But let’s say someone has a podcast or social media platform and they have maybe only 100,000 followers but the podcast actually engages with the audience… they audience is more likely to buy their product because they feel a real relationship. The podcast page would make more money than the model page- they have a smaller audience but a real audience and connection. Guys the recruiting process is the same thing. How pissed off would you get if someone you didn’t know sent you a spam message everyday asking you for something? It would get pretty annoying- so please don’t be that guy. That’s not how you get recruited. You need to meet college coaches, build real connections with them, follow them & then you can start to reach out to them. That’s why college camps and meeting coaches when they come to your school is important. That’s how the DM game works. Let’s say you go to a camp, perform really well and a coach wants to talk to you after. You should exchange info, follow him on Twitter and DM him thanking him for his time. Then proceed to keep in contact with him throughout the off season/season and send him your film if he asks or when you make your finalized highlight tape. You will have a WAY HIGHER success rate of doing that. Now some coaches do read their DMs but think of how many DMs they get on a day to day basis. Pretty hard to stand out, however a real relationship is going to stand out to a coach. So when it comes to DMing coaches- avoid being a spam robot. Be a real person & build an actual relationship with the coach. It’s tedious work, but it honestly comes down to how bad you actually want it.
