So I would say there are 5 things on your varsity highlight tape that you want to have that division 1 level college coaches look for and honestly any college coach looks for.
1)- Explosive plays. Whether that’s on defense, special teams or at WR. They don’t want to see guys catch a wide open fade for a walk in TD on a busted coverage. Thousands of WRs can do the exact same thing. They want to see guys for example, catch a slant- break a tackle or make someone miss & take it 60-70 for a TD. That’s what most WRs can’t do.
2)- Tough catches. Catches in traffic, while getting hit, jump balls etc.
3)- Great route running and winning against man coverage. A lot of high school WRs use the excuse of, “oh well I only see zone coverage”. You are going to see press man in college- coaches want to see if you can win.
4)- Blocking. At least 40% of your offense will be run plays. Don’t be a 60% player & only make a difference in the pass game.
5)- Speed. You gotta have some type of speed to play college football as a receiver. You are going up against fast DBs every play, so speed work needs to be a big staple of your off season training and focus of your varsity film.
If you can showcase these 5 attributes on film, I promise you that you will stand out amongst the crowd when it comes to recruiting.
