So without varsity film, you will not be able to receive a legitimate committable scholarship offer. You cannot receive a committable offer until the summer before your junior year. So all of these offers that you see these younger kids getting without varsity tape, are all based on potential. It’s verbal, which doesn’t mean anything. So, please don’t get discouraged by other people’s “success”. Focus on staying in your lane and doing what YOU can do to set yourself up best for the recruiting process.

So, if you don’t have varsity film… your main focus needs to be getting it. Your primary focus should be getting bigger, faster, stronger, improved technique and improved knowledge of your playbook. But there are some things you can do on the side to better set yourself up for recruiting when you get varsity film.

1)- Make an X account (formerly know as Twitter). You make this account so you have a place to communicate with coaches. Your profile should include your full name, graduating class, position & the school you attend. On the app you should follow coaches, message coaches and try to build relationships with them.

Now, how do you do that without film? You need to post content on their consistently to have some kind of social media presence. Whether it clips of you training, working out etc. But you should messages coaches with the mindset of a question rather than “hey watch my film &  recruit me” I would reach out to coaches and ask them if they have any camp opportunities coming up that you can attend. It’s a simple easy question & people are more likely to respond to a question. So, make a target list of about 30-40 coaches and message them all asking about camp opportunities. You do this so you can go to a camp where you have prior communication with a coach. And also, it opens up a line of communication on Twitter. So when you get varsity film, you have someone to send it to.

2)- Attending satellite camps. So, I’m not saying break the bank and travel to every college camp. Your primary investment of your time and money should be towards improving so you can make varsity. But go to a couple of satellite camps or mega camps in the summer (camps that have more than one college staffs in attendance). Now why should you do this? It’s more opportunities to meet coaches. After the camp, hopefully you have impressed them, you should shake every coaches hand, follow them on Twitter them immediately DM them after the camp thanking them for their time. This might create a follow, a message back or just an opened message… which is a contact you just created for yourself when you get varsity film.

So these two things are great methods to use on the side to create relationships and network with coaches. You never know what can happen in a few years with your varsity tape- some coaches may end up at other schools who recruit your position or are in need of your position and you all of a sudden can turn into someone they are looking at. So your primary focus needs to be getting better to make varsity, but this is how you can start the recruiting process without film.
