So first things first when it comes to a position battle, you are not competing with someone else. You are competing with yourself. You know what you need to do to win the starting job. You need to put in the time in the off season, get bigger, get stronger, get faster and improve your positional skills. But when it comes down to competing at practice it’s all about elevating and challenging yourself to be better. If you're focusing on the other guy you’re competing with and wondering what he’s doing and wondering how his reps are going, that’s less time you’re focusing on yourself and elevating your game. So my biggest piece of advice is have the mindset that everything can be better. If you are perfect at your craft, there shouldn’t be ANYBODY on the team who can compete with you and take your job from you. When you think about it like this, it makes a lot of sense. Coaches want to win, and if you can be the best at your responsibility, they will put you on the field. Plain and simple. Don’t leave anything to the judges, and what I mean by that is don’t let your competition be better than you in certain areas. I’m not saying focus on the competition & their strengths- you just simply need to challenge yourself to be the best in all aspects of your position. Let’s say you’re a QB. The aspects of that position are arm strength, accuracy, extending plays, knowledge of your playbook and I would say leadership. You should focus on improvement and being the absolute best in those areas rather than looking over your shoulder just trying to be better than the next guy. When you make this mindset shift, position battles will become easier and you will take your skills to a level you never thought possible. Never be satisfied with your game.
