If you are a short WR and you would like to play college football- this article is for you. We are going to talk about exactly what college coaches look for in WRs who are undersized. I hope this can help!

So the first thing you need if you are short at the next level is going to be speed and explosiveness. I’m sorry but if you are short and slow, there isn’t many places for you at the next level with those attributes. So you need at least some level of speed. I highly recommend emphasizing that in the off season. Every athlete should invest in a speed coach, speed workout plans to do, maybe run track if you guys have a good program etc. There are many things you can do to improve your speed that do not require that much time. If you guys would like to checkout a speed workout plan we made, checkout the link below.
The second thing you need as a short WR is great hands. A 6’4 WR who make explosive plays can get away with a few drops, but as the little guy, you need to do all of the details better than the bigger guy. That’s the only way you can stay on the field. Any pass that is thrown to you that you can get your hands on you need to catch it. Few things you can do to work on this. 1)- Get with your QB and anytime you throw with a QB catch 100 passes 2)- work on your grip strength with exercises like finger tip push ups 3)- Hand eye tennis ball coordination drills that you can do by yourself. If you’d like some, contact us on social media and we can send you some.
Lastly, play other positions on the field. WR might be your main spot but honestly if you are undersized college coaches want to know one thing… can you make big plays? So the more plays you get, the more opportunities you get to make big plays and show your skills off. So play running back as well as WR, play DB, return punts, return kicks etc. You look at the top athletes every year, they all play multiple spots. College coaches want athletes in general, but they especially want athletes when you are undersized.
