So I am writing this article for the guys who aren’t starting and obviously want to start. Some of these things we will discuss can help you get that starting role or at least know the reason why you may not be playing right now.

1)- Work ethic. There is no secret that working hard gives you results. Hard work pays off and anybody who says otherwise has probably never worked that hard. So if you didn’t do the work in the off season, didn’t learn your playbook etc. You will probably not play. Guys who are just natural athletes & don’t work that hard but know their playbook will play over you. So you can’t leave anything to the “judges” as they say in boxing. Be better than your competition in every aspect & outwork them in every aspect.

2)- You might be working hard, but you have a bad attitude. Guys, high school coaches are people too. If you show up late, don’t look them in the eye, don’t practice hard… why in the hell would they play you. You wouldn’t treat your boss at a job like that so why should you treat your coaches like that? You need to be a coachable, respectful athlete. If you combine that with doing the little things right like what we mentioned above, you will be on your coaches good side.

3)- You didn’t do the RIGHT type of training in the off season. There are a lot of bad trainers out there believe it or not. Just because they played in college or the league doesn’t make them a good trainer. A lot of parents drink the kool aid of a lot of these “Gurus” and their kids will train with them and see absolutely zero results. If you aren’t training like how you play, you aren’t going to make big plays when the pads come on. Everyone looks good in T-shirt/shorts & often times it’s on the athlete to take the coaching and rep it out on their own, but if you are doing drills that don’t translate to an actual game scenario… why do them? In the military they teach you to “train how you fight”. So they put the military through realistic situations that they will see in the field. So they are prepared & when they have to execute a task they are confident in it. There is no difference in football training. Train like how you play the game.
