So if you are about to enter your freshman season of football, there are a few things that coaches will be looking for.
)- Speed. Biggest difference from youth football to high school football is the speed of the game. So speed training needs to be a big staple of your off season. Training with resistance like hill sprints, running with sleds etc. can all help your case.
)- Great hands. You need to be consistent. I’m a firm believer if you’re playing freshman ball, it’s not that hard to be WR1 on your team. So making sure that you have great hands can keep you on the field and get you more targets.
)- Knowing your plays. Freshman players, especially guys who play varsity ball, don’t understand even at the high school level that plays get a little more complex. So you need to make sure you are studying your playbook and know what to do. Guys will literally have all of the talent and potential in the world, but are kept off the field because they don’t know their plays.
)- Gaining weight. Another big difference from youth ball to freshman ball is the size of the players. So you need to be adding muscle mass to your frame in the off season. Get in the gym, it is time. Freshman year is too late to start lifting and make sure your diet is correct for gaining weight. High in calories, carbs and super high in protein.
