So I recommend eating anywhere from 2-4 hours before a game/practice. 2 hours before if your game is early in the morning (yes you might have to get up a little earlier than usual)But the best foods to eat are lean proteins and slow releasing carbs that don’t spike your blood sugar levels. When I was in high school, we would always have a “pre game meal”. But we did the pre game meal so wrong. We’d have white flour spaghetti and meatballs. With garlic bread. Now the thought process was, “this is a lot of carbs so it’s great for energy”. But we’d eat it 4 hours before game time, everyone’s energy levels would spike, then we’d all be asleep on the bus heading to the game. What carbs do is they raise your blood sugar levels which increases energy, but what goes up, must come down. So if the levels go insanely high, which is what white flour carbs aka fast releasing carbs do, they will drop down quite rapidly. So you will have low energy levels at game time. You want to eat a slower releasing carb. So your blood sugar levels raise, but don’t rise insanely fast. So carbs like sweet potatoes or rice are great for that. It’s a sustained energy. Not a quick energy burst. As long as you don’t over eat. That is key. Don’t eat a ton. Eat light before a practice please. For protein I’d say to eat something lean. I don’t recommend a huge steak. Maybe 2 small chicken breast pieces or some beef. But again, don’t over do it. You want to feel full but not stuffed.I feel if you follow this process before a game, you will have sustained energy and will not start getting hungry around the 4th quarter.
