So if you’re an athlete that struggles with pre game nerves, that’s totally normal and happens to everyone. Below are 3 strategies that helped me deal with it much better and made the game much easier for me.

1)- Take things one rep at a time. Often times guys get a lot of anxiety when they think about the game as a whole. They worry about winning, what if this goes wrong etc. And all of those are valid things to think about but often times fear is an illusion of the unknown. All you can control is what you do every rep. So you have to isolate your job. What’s your job on this rep? Okay cool, let’s do that perfectly. And when that play ends, let’s focus on the next rep.

2)- Do your 1/11th. This essentially means relying on your teammates to do their job. A lot of guys feel the weight of the entire game is on their shoulders. If they don’t perform, the team loses. That’s not the case. The team is what makes the team lose. So all you can focus on is your job. This is especially true for QBs. You can’t worry about the line blocking or the receivers catching the ball. That’s their job. There are 11 guys on the field that all have to execute. And you just have to do your part. AKA your 1/11th.

3)- Don’t let the play result dictate your emotions. I think a lot of guys get nervous because they are afraid to mess up. They make a mistake, then all of a sudden they get in their head and start saying nothing but negative thoughts to themselves. You can’t let that happen. Understand that mistakes are inevitable. 100% guarantee bad things are gonna happen. So, how are you going to respond? Lean from the mistake- then forget it. Be unemotional when things go wrong. Because if you have this roller coaster of emotions where you’re happy when things go well, then mad when things go bad… that would give anybody anxiety.
