So if you are going to enter your freshman year next year and you maybe have some anxiety or don’t know what to expect about freshman football- this is what I’d recommend!

So first things first, the biggest difference between high school ball and youth ball is the speed, size and skill level of the players. It’s not major. It’s nothing you can’t handle. But that is what I’d focus on the most in the off season. I would get a speed trainer, I would get a skill specific trainer who can help with your position, & I would start lifting. Preferably with your team. I recommend as soon as the season is over, contact the coaches at the high school you plan on going to and see if there is any opportunity to train with the team or if they have an off season lifting program for incoming freshman. That can help you get aquatinted with the staff & obviously help you put on size to absorb hits from bigger players.

Now, if high school is your first year of TACKLE football… which is totally fine. My freshman year was my first year and I turned out ok. I would recommend doing everything I stated above, but prioritizing contact on your field drills. The hardest thing to get used to is the equipment and contact. So, if you can do all of your training drills with a helmet & pads on & try to have a friend/dad/brother hit you with some type of blocking pad or softer object while you’re doing drill work… you will get used to the contact a lot faster. If you’re a defensive guy, I’d do a ton of bag tackling drills to get you used to proper tackling form and how that works. But just know, it’s totally normal to be a little apprehensive. You just need to put in the effort/time this off season.
